SenseTime ‘Smart AI Epidemic Prevention Platform’ Helps Control Coronavirus Cross-infection

2020-02-14

Beijing – February 14, 2020 – SenseTime, a leading global artificial intelligence (AI) company that specializes in computer vision and deep learning, has deployed the ‘Smart AI Epidemic Prevention Platform’ to various locations to help control the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic across China.

As cities across Mainland China begin to return to work after the shutdown and limits on travel, SenseTime’s ‘Smart AI Epidemic Prevention Platform’ provides a fast and effective system for screening and detection of suspected carriers of the Coronavirus in public spaces. The system is now applied in subway station, school and community center in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. It scans large groups, up to 10 people per second, and remotely identifies individuals who display symptoms of a fever. This improves the efficiency of fever screening and minimizes the risk of cross-infection among citizens.

The ‘Smart AI Epidemic Prevention Platform’ can detect a fever within an accuracy of 0.3°C because it integrates sophisticated AI algorithms with infrared thermal technology. It can identify any individual who is not wearing a face mask, with a success rate over 99%, before notifying the personnel on duty.

At Terminal 3 Station of the Airport Express of Beijing Subway, the ‘Smart AI Epidemic Prevention Platform’ allows passengers to pass directly through the security checkpoint without stopping for a manual body temperature check. The system profiles the body temperature of every passenger and displays the data live on a monitor, alerting staff to any individual whose body temperature exceeds 37.3°C and requires further screening. In addition, the system can also be programmed to inform staff of any passengers who are not wearing a mask heading to the subway system.

The AI platform is also in operation at the Xuhui Canteen of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the community center in Nanshan District, Shenzhen. It offers peace of mind and security for students and citizens who wish to continue their normal daily lives, attending schools or visit friends, knowing the ‘Smart AI Epidemic Prevention Platform’ will help them identify those with symptoms of fever or who are not wearing a face mask.

Historically, thermal imaging systems have been used in various public venues for body temperature checks to improve safety and efficiency. But due to low image resolution and common scanning problems associated with people wearing masks, glasses and hats, traditional thermal imaging devices are unable to meet the urgent need for accuracy at this time. Therefore, the ‘Smart AI Epidemic Prevention Platform’ applies sophisticated AI algorithms to optimize the accuracy of temperature screening with key advantages listed below:

1. An accuracy of +/- 0.3°C: measures only the forehead temperature with an accuracy of +/- 0.3℃. Sends alerts when fever is detected and can re-measure the temperature.

2. Screens up to 10 people per second without direct contact: screens the body temperatures of up to 10 people simultaneously per second, lowering the risk of cross-infection and enhancing the speed for fever screening in crowded public places.

3. Instant notification of individuals without masks: identifies passengers without masks and sends notification, the accuracy rate for this function is over 99%.

4. Supports record search function: allows administrators to retrieve and search for previous records of the temperature screening and mask identification.

In the fight against the coronavirus, SenseTime uses its expertise in AI technologies to assist the public in detecting fever effectively and efficiently without direct contact, contributing to prevention and control of the epidemic and safeguarding the well-being of people.
