SenseTime Co-Leads Automotive Data Masking Consultation Paper, Strengthens Data Protection for Smart Autos

2022-08-23

August 23, 2022, Hong Kong – SenseTime announced the publication of the consultation paper “Technical Requirements and Methods for Automobile Transmission Video and Image Masking” (hereinafter referred to as the “consultation paper”). The consultation paper sets the standard system framework for the Chinese automotive industry to implement an effective data desensitization system in order to strengthen the protection of personal data and elevate data security levels for the whole industry.

With the increasing popularity of smart cars, data masking is essential to ensure the safe transmission of massive auto data to the cloud, a fundamental objective to establish the smart auto industry’s sustainable development. In August 2021, China issued the Provisions on Management of Automotive Data Security (Trial), outlining key principles for automotive data processing activities, including anonymization and de-identification to achieve data desensitization. To advance these key principles, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers worked with SenseTime and Shanghai Motor Vehicle Inspection Certification & Tech Innovation Center to develop the consultation paper. The paper was officially published on August 18.

The consultation paper provides a comprehensive list of requirements for the transmission of automobile videos and images, including data formats, sample quality, masking functions, performance, test methods and masking results. Automotive companies that implement the stated requirements demonstrate an ability to utilize automotive data responsibly and ethically as well as fulfill the prerequisite for deploying closed-loop data for advanced intelligent driving.

As a leading AI software company, SenseTime is always committed to developing responsible AI technologies. SenseTime’s SenseAuto Empower engine provides auto companies with an AI-powered, one-stop solution to process data masking with high efficiency and low cost. Covering multiple chips and hardware platforms, the solution can be deployed in both new cars and used cars and is compatible with different SoC (system-on-a-chip) platforms including smart cabin and smart driving domains. Environmental data of both smart cabin and smart driving as well as roadside data are supported.

Leveraging the company’s continuous production of data masking algorithms and rich experience in developing various industry standards, SenseTime’s data masking solution achieves top accuracy and performance with low resource utilization. SenseTime is currently working with multiple industry partners to roll out data masking activities to ensure data compliance. Implementing an industry-wide data masking system will complete a crucial step in accelerating the development of higher-level autonomous driving and better serving end-users.
